Article about DPF filter removal
Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) were designed to remove chemicals from exhaust fumes of diesel engines and therefore help control the emissions from the vehicle. The DPF traps and removes diesel particulate (soot, in other words) from emissions, burning it off at high temperatures and leaving nothing but a fine ash. The engine management system pumps a little diesel into the DPF to help combustion of the soot.

A commonly occurring problem is that the residual ash causes the DPF to become blocked. As it becomes more and more blocked, engine performance is detrimentally affected. A blocked DPF causes an obstruction in the exhaust system, restricting exhaust gas flow, causing engine inefficiency and reducing your miles per gallon. Also, when the DPF is totally blocked, there is no option but to replace the DPF. If the car is out of warranty, this will not be a cheap job. Add this to the diesel wasted fuelling the DPF (not your engine) and you’ve got a compelling case to think about removing your DPF.
But isn’t the DPF there to do a job? Good question. The Diesel Particulate Filter was originally intended to filter out harmful toxins and lower the emissions of your diesel engine, making it more environmentally friendly. Since they were designed, however, new low sulphur diesel fuel contains much less off the chemicals the DPF was created to filter out. It’s not illegal to remove your DPF and it won’t cause your car to fail its MOT test.
